Acks Abrasive Paste: We sand our pieces using 240-400 grit sandpaper or on resins/wood we may sand up to 600 grit. We then apply 2 coats of our home made number 2 cut of food safe shellac for use as a sanding sealer. Rub in a thin coat of abrasive paste and turn you machine on around 500 rpm, you will feel the abrasive breaking down. This paste starts out at about 1000 grit and gets finer as it breaks down. With resin you may have to do this twice, when satisfied make sure you continue to rub all sanding paste off until there is no more left on a clean towel, This should leave you with a semi gloss, smooth finish and it is now pretty much sealed also. Wear eye protection, it does contain a grit and you do not want this in your eyes because it can irritate obviously.
Acks Polish: Again, turn your lathe on a low rpm and work in a coating of polish, you may leave it sit for a few minutes if the wood is still porous but not necessary. NOW, pick up the speed of the lathe, 1000-1200, and treat this polish as you would a friction polish, you must get it warm, some people apply this polish twice. Our carnuba wax comes from a laboratory, it is pure and very expensive, we buy only the best wax available. Carnuba is the hardest wax know to this day that is not man made.
Recondition your wood spoons, chopping block with this polish also, again, with the carnuba, it adds an extra layer of protection and hardness.
We recommend watching some you tube videos to see the different applications you can use with our pastes, many of our turners use our abrasive over CA glue, over lacquer, and many other finishes to get a deeper level of shine.
Try making your own shine juice from shellac flakes and ethanol, it works great for a sealer .
Our pastes are made exclusively in Coudersport, Pennsylvania and no where else! Our pastes ARE NOT for resale unless previously agreed upon.
Thank you so much for using our paste, they are still made and packaged one jar at a time!!
NEW , IMPROVED ACKS POLISH!!!
To make your top coat polish an even more durable layer of protection and shine, we now add DOUBLE the amount of carnuba wax flakes at no extra charge to our customers !! You may notice your polish is a
bit stiffer then normal, just work it to soften, it’s harder in the jar because of the extra carnuba..
As most of you know we have always stated that tung oil, walnut oil, danish oil does not belong at the lathe. We say that for one reason, curing and drying time.
So the order of application is as follows:
1.No SANDING SEALER
2. Apply one coat of the First Step tung paste, let it sit for 15 minutes, then rub off excess. No more coats unless your willing to wait at least 24 hours, the more coats the longer curing, there is no need, your not trying to build a finish.
I would wait 2 hours minimum though to give it a chance to soak in good.
3.Rub in a coat of abrasive paste and wipe off as much as possible, buff it in.
We still felt like we had to come out with a high quality paste containing virgin tung oil for a first step on table tops, chopping boards, ect. or anything to add one extra layer of protection and a little richness to the wood color.
We combined just the right amount of tung oil to cut down on the drying time. So your lathe is not tied up for a week waiting to dry.
Food and Drug Act says , ONCE CURED, pure tung oil is food safe, we will leave
that up to the individual on how much they trust that statement.
SORRY, UNLESS A CONTAINER IS BROKEN OPEN, WE DO NOT ACCEPT RETURNS.
